Entry #85: A day with mom.

A day with my mom started with church and ended with cakes.
Here's what happened in between.
Brunch at Bandits Coffee Bar

There's no signage above the shop but there's a brightly lit neon lights signage right before you push open the sliding door into the cafe.

In case you couldn't locate it, just remember it's next to WheatField Bakery and below a green shop lot.

Mom's Pick - Posh Beans Mushroom Toast (RM13)

Buttered Toast topped with posh beans, mushroom, cherry tomatoes, onions, avocado and goat cheese. A terrific combination, I must say.
I don't usually fancy peas but this time around, I find myself stealing more than a bite of this hearty, light and surprisingly, appetizing toast.

My Pick - Beef Bacon Linguine (RM18)

On the other hand, I wasn't all that impressed with this tangy linguine with squashed beef bacon and goat cheese. It's slightly too salty for both my mom and my liking. If not for that, I think I would enjoy this creative rendition of linguine.

Tea (RM10 each)

They serve very interesting combination of teas. If you're a tea lover, you ought to drop by and try it out.
Ordered lemongrass, ginger and orange peel for mom and peonies, persian rose and basil for myself.

Cheese Tart (RM9) topped with roasted macadamia drizzled in salted caramel sauce

This mini tart is like a hand grenade. Small but lethal. I'm not sure that's the right description but as long as it gets the message across, I guess.
The filling was warm and soft, the crust was buttery and flaky, when paired with the macadamia and salted caramel sauce on top, it's literally foolproof.

Nutella Oreo Cheesecake. (RM11)

Oreo cheesecake at the bottom followed by a layer of oreo cookies and topped with nutella cream chocolate drizzle.

Dinner at Way Modern Chinois
This year, we chose to celebrate Mother's Day at Way Modern Chinois, the sister company of Ploy which is right next door.
You would never have guessed that beyond the lift like entrance is actually a sophisticated and elegant restaurant specializing in contemporary Chinese cuisine.

For the appetizers, we've ordered Golden Rose Wanton, Snow Bun and Salted Egg Chicken Strip.

Golden Rose Wonton (RM20 for 5 pcs)

Quite appropriate for a celebration like Mother's Day, don't you think.
Shrimp fillings wrapped with wonton wrappers, deep-fried, dipped in spicy red sauce and finally, presented like a bouquet of rose. Except its edible.
I must say though, the shrimp fillings are fresh and this simple appetizer is well executed.

Snow Bun (RM10 for 2 pcs)

Basically, this is a polo bun with char siew chicken fillings. Crispy on the outside, melts upon the first bite and airy on the inside.

Salted Egg Chicken Strip (RM18)

Rather than as an appetizer, we had this dish as one of our mains and paired it with rice. The portion was reasonable, the chicken strips were marinated thoroughly with salted egg and fried to perfection. Expect a dry version of salted egg chicken strip which are very delectable and very addictive.

Finally moving on to the mains, we've ordered hong kong choy sum, drunken chicken, crispy lion fish, truffle roast duck, crab roe fried rice and yong chow fried rice.

Hong Kong Choy Sum (RM20)

Drunken Chicken (RM24)

Crispy Lion Fish (RM59)

One of the dishes that I'm not completely crazy over and the only dish that had leftovers at the end of the meal. Deboned and Deep Fried Garoupa, marinated in salt and pepper, served with sweet and sour sauce (similar to Thai sauce). For me this dish just lacks in comparison and doesn't particularly stand out.

Truffle Roast Duck (RM168)

Highlight of the day.
A dish that fills the entire dining table with the fragrance of truffles.
Duck carefully marinated with truffle sauce, double roasted with truffle oil and topped with slices of truffles on top. Can be eaten plain or paired with truffle sauce or dark sweet sauce. While eating it plain will let you indulge in the aromatic flavour of the truffles, pairing it with the dark sweet sauce and truffle sauce is another experience by itself. With the dark sweet sauce, it's like an interplay of sweet and savoury in your mouth and with the truffle sauce, you'll experience a certain kind of balance created from the mildness of the truffle sauce and the strong aromatic flavours of the duck.
I must say that this duck was roasted to literal perfection with the crisp skin, tender meat and aromatic flavours. Note that this dish needs to be pre-ordered 24-hours in advance.

Crab Roe Fried Rice (RM42)

Yong Chow Fried Rice (RM28)

To end the meal, we've ordered pomelo mango sago and honey osmanthus pudding as desserts. While I thoroughly enjoyed the meal, I don't think way is a strong player when it comes to the desserts.

Pomelo Mango Sago (RM16)

Grapefruit and Sago topped with fresh mango mousse.
I was impressed with the fresh mango mousse but it doesn't make up for the bitterness of the grapefruits.

Honey Osmanthus Pudding (RM10)

While I find no wrong with the taste, the jelly is not as chilled and dense as I expected it to be.

On a side note, Basmati Rice is available at RM7 per bowl and you are welcome to bring your own tea but at a corkage fee of RM 10.

Verdict: For a high end restaurant, I was rather disappointed in the service.
First of all, they rarely came over to the table to serve tea or refill the water in the tea pot. This is an important tradition in Chinese Restaurant.
Secondly, the service is rather slow and the place wasn't exactly fully occupied.
The good side is that the ingredients used to prepare the dishes were all very fresh and the taste for most of the dishes are on point. I particularly enjoyed the Truffle Roast Duck, Golden Rose Wonton and Salted Egg Chicken Strip.

Headed home shortly after dinner and concluded the day with this cheesecake I baked on Saturday.

So yeah, that is how I've spent my Mother's Day.

Additional Photos from the day:

Eldest brother and his gf got balloons for mom and grandma.
Each of us had to write our wishes for both of them on the balloons.
Rather sweet and thoughtful, don't you think? Something different from the usual flowers for Mother's Day.

Anyways, I shall end this post with a group photo and I hope everyone had an amazing Mother's Day as I did. Hopefully the reviews on Bandits Coffee Bar and Way Modern Chinois were helpful too!
Goodbye for now.

Kai Wen Chim.
